Business leaders want improvements in structural aid

October 23, 2019

Abstract : Business leaders in the eastern German region of the Lausitz are demanding improvements in the planned legislation for assistance in economic restructuring.

Business leaders in the eastern German region of the Lausitz are demanding improvements in the planned legislation for assistance in economic restructuring.

The federal government had, with the proposed legislation, a chance to create important incentives for companies in the region affected by the withdrawal from coal, Klaus Aha, managing director of a group called Economic Initiative of Lausitz, said in Berlin on Wednesday.

This included tax breaks on investments, he said. For the Lausitz energy sector this would be important in the future in order to be competitive against other European countries, Aha said. In his view the federal government, in the drive for a transition in the energy sector, must create the framework conditions for more growth and promoting structural change.

His remarks concerned plans for structural transition of the coal-mining regions of the Lausitz, central Germany and the Rhine region in which the federal and state governments are to provide up to 40 billion euros (44.5 billion dollars). Of that sum, the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia would get 37 per cent, with the rest going to the eastern German states Brandenburg (25.8 per cent), Saxony (25.2 per cent) and Saxony-Anhalt (12 per cent).
