Guangxi sounds horn to accelerate 5G development and push for digital economy

September 03, 2019

Abstract :  South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is set to fully use 5G innovation to drive industrial transformation and upgrade, push for the building of a digital Guangxi, and offer a new driving force for social and economic development.

BEIJING, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is set to fully leverage 5G innovation to drive industrial transformation and upgrade, push for the building of a digital Guangxi, and offer a new driving force for social and economic development, according to an action plan on accelerating 5G industry development issued by local authorities on August 23.

The action plan proposes four objectives centering on network building, application integration, industry nurturing, and innovation capability.

To be specific, by late 2021, no less than 4 million households in Guangxi will have access to 5G; the industrial output of 5G is expected to top 100 billion yuan, which would create a digital economy in Guangxi with a size of 400 billion yuan and gather a host of national 5G industry application clusters and 5G integration application demonstration zones; about 12 platforms of district-level and above for 5G technology or application innovation shall be built, which will generate a series of self-developed technologies and application results; new models and approaches of 5G application with Guangxi features would be identified, and new powerhouses for 5G application innovation and business model innovation shall be shaped.

Network building: concerted efforts for public sharing and ASEAN-oriented interconnection

According to the action plan, governments at all levels in Guangxi should give priority to step up the construction of 5G communication infrastructure on the basis of the existing overall land utilization plan and its urban & rural development plan.

Besides, Guangxi plans to cover its major cities and towns, such as Nanning, Liuzhou, Guilin, Yulin, Qinzhou, with 5G networks, and propel the coverage of 5G network in its main arterial traffic, key traffic hubs and venues, as well as hot regions. By the end of 2021, 5G network will be extended to its key counties and townships.

Meanwhile, greater efforts would be made to build ASEAN-oriented information infrastructure, improve the overall layout of 5G international communication, and build Guangxi into a 5G-based international information hub.

Application scenario: charting the outlook for Guangxi's digital economy

The action plan depicts 15 application scenarios of 5G, involving all aspects of social and economic development and charting a new outlook for Guangxi's digital economy led by 5G.

Firstly, relying on the Nanning core base of China-ASEAN Information Harbor and Qinzhou sub-center, 5G technology will be harnessed to accelerate  platform construction in infrastructure, information sharing, technical cooperation, trade and economic services, and cultural exchanges, and build online China-ASEAN Expo.

Secondly, Guangxi will forge the 5G network-based industrial internet in key areas such as auto manufacturing, steel, and aluminum industry, in a bid to realize a series of application focusing on identity resolution, remote operation and maintenance of equipment, visual inspection of machine and mobile robot navigation.

Thirdly, 5G network will be used to build a batch of intelligent scenic areas, intelligent travel agencies, and intelligent hotels, so as to realize more digital, intelligent operation of key tourism areas in Nanning, Liuzhou, Guilin, and Beihai.

Fourthly, efforts will be made for faster integration of 5G application and agricultural production, operation, management and service in sugar cane production, special fruits, stock raising, forestry, and other special fields, aiming to build 5G-empowered intelligent agricultural industrial parks.

Fifthly, Guangxi will further push forward the construction of intelligent campuses, intelligent classrooms, intelligent labs, and other aspects of intelligent teaching environment based on 5G network and other new technologies. Meanwhile, efforts will be made to develop remote online education, push for inclusive sharing of quality digital education resources, and promote the innovative application of information technology in education, teaching, and educational management.

Guangxi will promote the integration of 5G application and smart logistics, further propel the intelligent upgrade and transformation of storage and logistics industry, build three-dimensional automatic storage system and comprehensive information service platform for multimodal transport logistics, as well as nurture unmanned aerial vehicles, self-driving cars and other new model applications.

Furthermore, Guangxi will further push for 5G intelligent port construction in Beibu Bay, and set up advanced AR live combat command platform in a bid to build more automatic and intelligent ports.

Depending on 5G technology, Guangxi seeks to launch 10 intelligent industrial park and community model projects in Nanning, Liuzhou, Guilin, Qinzhou and other cities by 2012.

Moreover, Guangxi will carry out 5G application in multiple fields such as medicine, travel, and multi-media audio and visual systems, in a way to enhance the accuracy, security, applicability and efficiency of these application scenarios and enable more people to gain better experience and livelihood with the development of 5G technology.

Through using 5G network technology, Guangxi is expected to realize telemedicine, distance education, and other information-enabled poverty reduction applications in major remote areas, aiming to support the region in fighting against poverty.
