In Brescia, the Silk Road becomes the Taste Road

August 01, 2019

MILAN, Jul 31 (Class Editori) -- Now the Silk Road stops in Brescia as well – and it has turned into the Taste Road, where both countries are looking forward to exchange experiences by sending Italian professors and students – part of the Brescia-based Cast Alimenti school – to China, and by receiving Chinese agri-food professionals in Italy.

The "Italy-China 2020: the Crafts of Taste along the Silk Road" initiative plans to create the first Chinese cooking academy in Europe within Cast Alimenti's very own headquarters – the High quality China Cuisine Academy. So Brescia, an industrial city of the Lombardy region, 100 kilometers away from Milan, is also set to become the Taste Road's capital.

The project, launched at the end of last week, aims to implement the business and to test innovative services and training courses in Italian and Chinese culinary art in view of 2020, the year of Italy-China culture and tourism. And it all falls within the economic and commercial exchange framework formalized though the signing of the MoU between the two countries.

In 2018, Italian agri-food products exports toward China reached 439 million euros, almost tripling in the last 10 years; meanwhile, imports reached 594 million. The Chinese delegation presenting this agri-food interchange with Brescia was comprised of the Consul General Song Xuefeng and of Luijie Yao, Deputy General Representative in Italy of CCPIT, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

"China and Italy have always showcased great interest in the study of their respective cultures," they explained. "In 2018, bilateral trade has exceeded the threshold of 50 billion dollars, while cumulative two-way investments have exceeded 20 billion. This date demonstrates the solidity of the relationship between the two countries".

The head of Economic Development of the Presidency of the Council, Carlo Capria, and the partner of the initiative, Maria Moreni, President of the Italy-China Link Association, took part in the meeting on behalf of Italy. "China is a country of 1.4 billion people, with high technological development and a 2 trillion investment destined to the Silk Road," said Capria. "For our part, we must promote certified and guaranteed high quality characterizing our productions, because the world wants to eat healthy. And when it comes to the agri-food sector, Italy is the world's champion".

"We are proud that Italy and China have found a new meeting point along the Taste Road," said Moreni. "This initiative signposts the start of a new era of collaboration between the two countries".

At the center of the project is Cast Alimenti, the training and high culinary specialization school. "We want to ensure that the Silk Road is traveled continuously," said the director of the Brescia-based institute, Vittorio Santoro. "It is precisely against the backdrop of the Silk Road that we have decided to give the Taste Crafts Road its 'food culture' take – which is fundamental for us. The exchange between Italy and China, in this sense, will make both actors grow".
